Winnemucca Recreation

Winnemucca offers a wide variety of outdoor activities. For more information on hunting, fishing, boating, and camping in the area please visit the Nevada Department of Wildlife (http://ndow.org/), The Nevada Division of the Bureau of Land Management (http://www.nv.blm.gov/), or the Nevada Division of State Parks (http://parks.nv.gov/).

There are numerous recreation activities for children and adolescents. In addition to the outdoor recreation activities listed on this page, children can choose from successful athletic and extracurricular programs through the school district as well as community athletics (Little League, Babe Ruth, AYSO, Football, Junior Golf, Swimming, MotoCross, Skateboarding, and others) and programs such as 4-H and Scouts.

Bloody Shins Trails
Bloody Shins is a collection of trails open to non-motorized use. The trails are best suited for mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding. While on the trail one can take on views of the valley as well of local wildlife.

Water Canyon
Water Canyon is quickly accessible from Winnemucca. Visitors can view wildlife, picnicking and camp. There is also a year-round stream.

Rye Patch Reservoir
Rye Patch State Park is 50 miles west of Winnemucca and is open year-round. Rye Patch is a popular place to spend the weekend boating, fishing, camping, or picnicking. For more information visit: http://parks.nv.gov/rp.htm.

Pine Forest Recreation Area
Pine Forest Recreation Area contains Blue Lakes, Onion Reservoir, and Knott Creek Reservoir. All of them offer fishing, hunting, wildlife viewing, camping, and mountain biking. The area is remote and four-wheel drive vehicles are advised.

High Rock Canyon
The High Rock Canyon was once part of the alternate route to the Oregon Trail. The canyon offers great scenery but access is limited to four-wheel drive vehicles due to the treacherous nature of the roads.

Black Rock Desert
The Black Rock Desert Playa is about four hours from Winnemucca. There are many opportunities for outdoor recreation, although the location has recently become well known as the site of the annual Burning Man Festival. The West Arm of the Black Rock has recreational opportunities as the East Arm is a Wilderness Study Area and no motorized vehicles are permitted.

Rodeo
Both indoor and outdoor rodeo events are held at the county fairgrounds and the Winnemucca Events Complex (1098 Fairgrounds Road). Some of the the events are the Junior Rodeo, Mule Races, the Cow Country Classic, Cutting Events, The County Fair and Stampede, the Annual Rodeo, High School Rodeo, Senior Rodeo, and the Ranch Hand Rodeo.

Golf
The Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course is a nine hole, 3250 yard par 26 course. The course has mature trees with flat terrain and many bunkers. The course is located at: 1395 Mizpah Street.

Gaming
Winnemucca offers many gaming opportunities. There are seven casinos as well as smaller establishments that offer video poker and slots.

Skiing
Access to some of the best skiing in the nation is only three hours from Winnemucca along Interstate 80. A trip to the Lake Tahoe-Truckee area provides some of the best outdoor activity available anywhere.
