Winnemucca is the county seat of Humboldt County, located in
north-central Nevada. The city is located 174 miles northeast of Reno
on Interstate 80. According to the 2000 census, Winnemucca's population
was 7174.
Winnemucca was originally named Marystown in reference to what
was then called the Mary's River (now called the Humboldt). Around
1850 the name of the settlement was changed to Frenchmen's Ford
which was then changed for the last time in 1863 to Winnemucca.
The last name change was in honor of an area Paiute chief.
When the transcontinental railroad came through the town in
the late 1860's, the population grew and in 1872 Winnemucca became
the county seat. In 1900 the infamous Butch Cassidy and the Hole
in the Wall Gang robbed the First National Bank, getting away
with a reported $30,000 in gold.
One of the biggest cultural influences on the area was the influx
of Basques from Spain in the early 1900s. Many worked for local
ranches, which continue to be an important part of the local economy,
and the Basques themselves became successful ranchers. To this
day the local Basque Festival is a popular event to enjoy such
Basque traditions as dance, competitions, traditional dress, food
and drink. There are still many local restaurants that serve some
of the best Basque cuisine found in Nevada.
