The Battle Mountain area was originally settled around 1845.
Reportedly, the the town was given its name due to a conflict
between settlers and Native Americans in the 1850's. This however,
may have never happened, but the name stuck. Battle mountain grew
from a transport point to mining town when copper, gold, and silver
were discovered in the area in the 1860's. Most recently, Battle
Mountain gained notoriety as the "Armpit of America"
according to the Washington Post.
Battle Mountain has maintained it agricultural and mining roots
as these, in addition to gaming and tourism, make up the bulk
of its economy.
